Do you still need underlayment?
Every KONO Harbor board comes with a 2 mm pad bonded to its back. It quiets footsteps, evens out small subfloor texture and saves buying and laying a separate underlayment roll.
Not a second foam layer: two pads stacked make the floor bouncy, and bounce wears out a click joint. Over a concrete slab, lay a 6 mil plastic vapor barrier first; over a wood subfloor, the attached pad is all you need.
An attached pad also makes the install faster and cleaner, which is part of why laminate is one of the most DIY-friendly floors. Installed by our crews, KONO Harbor starts at $6.10 per sqft in the Sacramento area.
What the pad changes in practice.
Sound: the pad takes the sharp click out of footsteps in the room itself. If your building has sound-rating rules for floors, ask us before ordering, because requirements vary by building. Feel: slightly softer and warmer than a board laid on bare concrete. Prep: minor texture disappears, but dips beyond about 3/16 inch over 10 feet still need leveling.
Old floors come out before the new one goes in: carpet and its pad, loose vinyl, anything soft. Over existing sheet vinyl or tile that is flat and tight, the padded board can usually go straight on top, which saves demolition time and cost.

Attached pad questions, answered straight.
Do I need underlayment for laminate with an attached pad?
No extra foam. Over concrete, add only a 6 mil plastic vapor barrier.
Is attached pad laminate quieter?
Yes, compared with laminate laid without any underlayment. The 2 mm pad softens the hollow click sound of footsteps.
Can I add a thicker underlayment anyway?
We do not recommend it: extra softness under a padded board lets the joints flex and open over time.
