What the AC rating tells you.
The AC rating is a standard abrasion test for laminate surfaces, from AC1 to AC5. AC4 is rated for heavy residential traffic and light commercial use: kitchens, hallways, kids and dogs.
AC1 and AC2 are for bedrooms and closets, AC3 for most homes, AC4 for busy homes and small offices, AC5 for commercial floors. The rating measures how the surface stands up to abrasion, impact and stains, so it is the best single number for durability.

What AC4 does not cover: dents from a dropped cast iron pan, gouges from dragging a refrigerator, and grit ground in by shoes. Felt pads, a door mat, and lifting rather than sliding furniture handle all three.

Is AC4 laminate good for dogs?
Yes. AC4 resists claw scratches well; wipe up accidents promptly.
AC4 or AC5?
AC5 is a commercial rating. For homes, including busy ones, AC4 is plenty.
What is the most durable laminate flooring?
